The primary aims of the INCOSO project are to raise awareness of the importance of intercultural competence in the training of social care workers, to develop recommendations for good practice and a bank of resources to support their implementation.
Funding from the Leonardo da Vinci programme for the training organisations in seven European countries was granted in August 2008 to run for two years. Activities have included project meetings in Finland, Germany, Wales and Belgium with a final meeting planned for Estonia. These meetings, involving a large number of staff and students, have been used to exchange ideas and coordinate plans and learn something of the culture and educational and social pracices in each country. Surveys were conducted in each country of students, educators and employers to explore learning needs in relation to inter-cultural competence. Workshop exercises for teaching intercultural competence have been piloted, recommendations of good practice have been developed and existing resources explored.
